Phillip Schofield has surprised fans by announcing that he is going to have surgery to become a tree.

The ‘This Morning’ TV presenter made the announcement during the last segment of yesterdays show.

Schofield is to have the surgery in June and said that it is something he has thought about doing for a long time; “Ever since I was a little boy, I felt like a tree in a boy’s body. When I was young, I loved standing out in the garden with my arms out like branches pretending to be a tree.”

Some fans have stated they are “disappointed” and “disgusted” by Schofield’s announcement, with one person saying “I thought he’d gone too far last year when he dressed as a tree on Halloween. This recent announcement is the last straw! ”

Joan McTavish, founder of the “Trees are people Too” group, has shared her surprise at some of the negative responses to Schofield’s announcement; “I think it’s shocking that in this day and age that there is still such an anti-tree feeling in the U.K. Our group has worked hard for decades to change people’s perceptions and challenge the fact that such prejudices exists

Despite some of the negative reception, a vast majority have voiced their support on social media sites. Brenda Jones of Millport said “Go on Phillip! I’ll love you always, whether man or tree! J”
